Project Baderskan
Gripsholm värdshus spa facility
For Mariefred residents, Baderskan is perhaps better known as Strandrestaurangen. A beautifully located building right on the edge of Lake Mälaren.
From the beginning of the 1900s, the building was a hot bathhouse and laundry room where Mariefred residents and their laundry were scrubbed by hefty laundry combs right into the 1970s.
Under the auspices of Svenska Kulturpärlor, the plan is to change the name Strandrestaurangen to its original name, which better refers to the history of the building, and to restore the building to its former glory - welcome to the Baderskan project.
The Baderskan project involves the extensive renovation and conversion of the building into a spa facility. The aim is to create a meeting place for both Mariefred residents and visitors, where they can enjoy relaxation and socializing.
The renovation includes both the interior and exterior, focusing on restoring the original appearance of the building by removing later additions.
The aim is to preserve the historic value of the building while adapting it to modern needs.

Eskilstuna-Kuriren has drawn attention to the renovation of the 100-year-old building on Strandvägen.
The renovation has been delayed by the pandemic and inflation, but now the work has finally started.
- It feels good to be up and running, says Fredrik Åström, CEO of Svenska Kulturpärlor, which runs Gripsholms Värdshus.
In Baderskan, a new spa and several suites are now emerging - part of the effort to create a holistic experience with accommodation, food, history and recreation.
Building heritage expert Stellan Ridderstrand has designed the building, which combines traditional craftsmanship with modern design and harmonizes with Mariefred's cultural-historical environment.
TadasBygg is leading the work with a new facade, carpentry from Gripsholm's carpentry and a veranda facing the water, built in sustainable materials such as lime plaster, natural stone and wood with timeless details in copper and glass.

The building permit for Baderskan has now been granted. We now look forward to moving forward in the process of creating a spa in the old Strandrestaurangen in Mariefred. This means that the building will return to the splendor it had in the early 1900s when Baderskan was a hot bathhouse.
We promise a place for long-distance guests who want to relax in our beautiful city and - not least - for all spa-hungry Mariefred residents!

It has been a little more than a year since the project with Baderskan started. A week ago we had a follow-up meeting with the Public Works Department, which will begin work on zoning changes in the fall. There was a big turnout and many curious people were on site when we visited Baderskan after we received the keys. We have secured the interior and exterior so that there will be no more burglaries and more vandalism, and covered all the windows and cleared a little in the garden. Now the house will be a little winterized until we are done with detailed plans and other things. We have big plans!
