14o meters of history
The art fence

Sweden 500 years
Experience the art fence
The art fence gives you a unique opportunity to experience and immerse yourself in Swedish history in a visual and artistic way. By walking along the 140-meter-long fence at Gripsholm Värdshus , you can explore the 71 motifs depicting various historical events from the 4th century until today.
The fence can be viewed around the clock, as the motifs are facing the neighboring streets. As the fence is made of corten, its character changes over time as the material oxidizes. The motifs also appear different depending on the season, weather and time of day. During the darker hours of the day, the fence is illuminated.

The story behind
The initiators of the art fence are the Åström family, who own and run Svenska Kulturpärlor - a company with three pearls; Dufweholm Manor outside Katrineholm, Gripsholm Värdshus in Mariefred and Södertuna Castle outside Gnesta. The company's CEO, Fredrik Åström, got the idea in the spring of 2022 when he thought about what they could do to celebrate the 500th anniversary.
The project was made possible thanks to sponsors, who are presented in full here, on the upcoming obelisk at Gripsholm Värdshus and in the upcoming book about the project.
The art fence has been mentioned in the Swedish daily press, SVT and the BBC's travel program "The Travel Show".
