Mariefred - a timeless idyll
To many people Mariefred means Gripsholm Castle and its history. But Mariefred is so much more. Wooden houses in soft, pastel shades. Apple trees with their twisted branches reaching over the pathways. Hollyhocks and cobbled pavements. The railway station with its pinnacles and towers. Oldfashioned steam engines that still operate. The royal deer-garden with its ancient oaks and free-roaming deer. And the S/S Mariefred also sails here. One of the oldest steamers in scheduled service in the world. A coal-fired beauty, built around the turn of the last century and sailing to Mariefred from Stockholm since 1903.
Gripsholms Golf Club's challenging, high-class 18-hole course is only five minute's walk from the inn. If you do not have a Green Card you can spend an hour practising your pitching and putting.
A centre for fine arts printmaking, Grafikens Hus, is also situated in Mariefred.
